When you pursue your post-secondary education through Athabasca University, you’re also choosing one of the most flexible and respected education options in the world. Thanks to on-line courses, you stay in your community while pursuing your studies; you can stay home with your children and earn your degree; you can work and study part-time or full-time. It’s up to you. It’s your choice.

For Athabasca University grad Leigh-anne Sheldon, making the choice to return to school marked the first step on a transformational journey of learning. “Without education, doors were always closing,” she said. “I wanted more for myself and my family. Now, so many doors are open.”

With three young children and a job, Leigh-anne quickly discovered a strong sense of purpose and empowerment through education. “Athabasca University allowed me to embrace my aboriginal culture and become confident in who I am,” she reflected. “To reach and empower others, you must first believe that you can fulfill your dreams.”

After beginning her post-secondary education at a local community college, Leigh-anne transferred those credits towards Athabasca University’s bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is now completing a master’s degree in psychology at a university in Edmonton.

“I can feel it in my heart that I am on the right path. I am in a great place and great things are ahead,” Leigh-anne said. “If you want it bad enough – whatever it is – you can do it.”

By balancing her roles as a mother, student, employee and volunteer, Leigh-anne is able to give back to her community. “This is my story to help others,” she affirmed. “Small successes lead to big successes. It’s just a matter of being persistent, patient and genuine.”
