This time of year is so much fun. More people during the summer have BBQ’s and outdoor party’s because the weather is bright and sunny. Here are some simple tips to turn your next BBQ into a healthy one, and how to beat the heat with exercise.
BBQ’s are such great times spent with friends and loved ones enjoying the weather. Below are a few simple substitutions to make your next BBQ guilt free, and help you stay on track with your health.
SUBSTITUTION FOR BURGERS:
Instead of hamburger meat opt for 99% lean ground turkey meat. It tastes delicious, only has 1.5 grams of fat, and is full of good protein. Try a whole grain bun instead of traditional white bread. Whole grains are good carbs your body needs. Skip the mayo and have mustard. Mayo is loaded with fat, where as mustard is fat free.
SUBSTITUTION FOR CHICKEN LEGS:
Instead of making traditional dark meat chicken legs, grill up some skinless, boneless chicken breast. Chicken breast has around 25 grams of protein per breast and because it’s skinless chicken breast is low in fat and much better for your body. When choosing chicken meat, white meat is always healthier.
SUBSTITUTION FOR DESSERT:
Instead of reaching for refined sugary deserts like cookies, cupcakes, and ice cream, reach for a healthy bowl of fruit, or a nice slice or watermelon. Fruit provides your body with natural sugars and fiber your body needs and watermelon is full of water and extremely low in calories. By eating a fresh bowl of fruit you will crave your sweet tooth and feel good about it.
Now that we have your BBQ meal on track, why not be kind to your joints and beat the heat by going for a swim. I encourage everyone I know while the weather is warm to take advantage of it, and exercise by swimming. Swimming is an excellent full body workout that burns calories and doesn’t put pressure on your joints and muscles. It’s especially good for people with back injuries and arthritis. Have some fun, get in the pool, burn calories, and swim.
I hope you enjoy the summer as much as I will. Try these tips to feel guilt free after a BBQ, and beat the heat with swimming. Have a
fantastic summer!
