ith the CFL in full swing and the NFL just kicking off (pun intended?) we need to sharpen our tailgate game. Whether you are firing up the grill in a parking lot outside the stadium before the game or you have
set up camp in your backyard, beer and BBQ are two major components that you will need to address — that is, if you are allowed to have a couple of suds in the parking lot…
Now the football season really stretches across some pretty different weather conditions which means that you need to evolve and adapt as the season changes. Your beers will need to grow and your BBQ may need to shift along with them.
Early Season Beers — Things are just getting going. Your team hasn’t lost too many games and they haven’t won too many yet either. The temperature is still hot so you need to stay hydrated. Early Season Beers will have a place in the cooler for the whole season as they are not too boozy, pair well with all types of BBQ and are generally the Swiss Army Knife of beers. For this occasion I am going to reach for Locker Room Lager by Post Game Brewing. At 4.2% ABV this refreshing lager is light and very drinkable and will pair with anything your grill can toss at it. You can get cases of it at your local Beer Store in 355ml cans or at the LCBO in tall cans.
Mid-Season Beers — The weather is changing and your team has been doing okay but no one is popping their Brewdog End of History just yet. The BBQ is getting more serious, your tailgate routine has settled in and you can relax just a bit. By now you have evolved from the quick BBQ burgers and dogs to longer, smokier cooks. You want to huddle around the smoker to keep that bit of Autumn chill off and a beer with a little more character is the perfect companion. I recently discovered Clear Lake Brewing’s Session Ale which has just enough body and hops to step the game up a notch but not too much that you can’t enjoy a few.
Late Season Beers — The weather has taken a turn for the worse and so has your team. It’s not snowing (much) but the rain might be worse than snow. It’s anybody’s guess whether the team will win today but everyone knows that they need to and you need to brace yourself for the worst. The tool for this job is something big, boozy and warming and that is just what New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk is. You will feel every ounce of this bourbon barrel aged imperial stout as you drink it. It will wraps it’s delicious arms around you and let you know that everything will be okay. As long as we get a great draft pick.
