Embarking on the journey to university or college for the first time can be a somewhat frightening and nerve-racking endeavour.
Prepare yourself (or your young- adult’s self) to make the entire experience smoother and less stressful for everyone involved.
We could tell you all the intricate bathroom pieces and kitchen appliances you’ll need, but rather here is a list of things you’re more likely to forget (probably due to excitement), that will come in handy down the road.
Driver’s license, health card, birth certificate, acceptance letter/program package, health insurance. Don’t forget to always know your mailing address wherever you go. If you’re not in residence, you’ll need this for mail, the Internet guy, and anything else you sign up for.
Of course you’re bringing your phone, chargers and laptops, but if you want to be the hero, bring an extra charger, USB cables and headphones if you have them; some one always forgets or loses theirs. Same goes for speakers, HDMI cords and even an external hard drive. If you’re the guy or girl who has a ton of movies, the rest of the dorm/house is going to love it when you share them. If you’re bringing a console, don’t forget those extra controllers.
CLOTHES FOR EVERYTHING
A rain coat, hats, bathing suits, sunglasses and don’t forget nice clothes. A banquet or formal event can call for dress shoes and dress clothes. Don’t be the one who doesn’t have any because you decided to bring 20 pairs of track pants instead. Best to bring some extra clothes hangers, and don’t forget flip-flops for communal showers!
No one is going to be checking to make sure you made proper notes, so you’ll develop your own way to learn the way that works best for you. Sticky notes, paper clips, highlighters and an organizer/planner are the best ways to keep track of your need-to-knows, dates, assignments and tests, as well as key info.
Be sure to check in with what is/is not allowed where you’re going to live. If off-campus, brush up on the landlord/tenant laws, and remember no one can tell you to do anything illegal, or stop you from doing anything that is legal!
