Today, Gwen Brydson is the Founder, Creative Director and CEO for Motion and Still Inc. – a full-service video and photo agency with 4 production spaces in downtown Toronto, specialising in digital content.
Her journey to success began after immigrating to Canada and finding herself overqualified for many of the available roles in corporate finance. Unhappy with her career path, Gwen seized the opportunity to make a change and decided to switch industries. Picking up a camera to express her creative side soon translated into paying gigs, and Gwen found work at Westside Studios as a lighting technician, specialising in still life photography, and as a photojournalist, covering events such as Fashion Week, TEDxToronto, and the Toronto G8 and G20 summits.
It wasn’t long before Gwen’s hard-work and perseverance paid off and she had carved out a place for herself in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Her company began to double in size each year, and she had to hire friends to help with the work she was booking.
However, achieving these milestones would have been more challenging without the financing and mentorship provided by Futurpreneur Canada. “At the time Futurpreneur was the only support I could find, and the only place where I could get a loan, as I had no credit history in Canada, being an immigrant, and they understood that. It enabled me to grow my business a lot faster, in a more efficient way. I could acquire equipment that would have other-wise impacted by bottom line, as basing my service offerings based on availability of rentals is the least cost-efficient way to operate,” shared Gwen.
Futurpreneur is the only national, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Canada’s aspiring young entrepreneurs. For over two decades, new business owners have realized their dreams through Futurpreneur’s resources, mentorship and up to $60,000 in financing.
