Every month, Mike Chalut has kept you in the know about our city’s most exciting and anticipated events. Dazzling you with his charm and larger-than-life personality, our readers have come to know him as part of the ONtheGO family. However, Chalut’s monthly article is just the tip of the iceberg of what this dynamic star has to offer. Over the years, Chalut has put his infectious energy to work as a notable radio and television personality. Among his many triumphs, in the west, Chalut hosted Breakfast Television, City News and KISS FM. Here in Toronto, Chalut hosted his own radio show on PROUD FM, planned world-class events, interviewed Hollywood royalty on the red carpet, and hosted two popular TV shows, Wedding SOS and Kim’s Rude Awakenings. We caught up with Canada’s host-with-the-most to find out more.
otg: You are known for being super-friendly, up-beat and oh-so-bubbly. Are you always in such a great mood? If so, what’s your secret?
mike: Go to the gym and sweat out negativity! Pick your poison … Yoga, Orange Theory, Good Life Fitness, a walk outside. Just get up and go! Some people work out to get a good body, I exercise so I can eat whatI want, cleanse my soul and mind, and most importantly, so I can smile. There is no secret. Surround yourself with positive people.
otg: You have made over 50 television appearances over the years. Do you have a memorable or funny onset experience?
mike: 12 years ago, I hosted an event for Beyoncé. My job was to greet her from her SUV, walk her through the paparazzi and into the venue, and seat her and her team in her assigned area. When I got the call that she arrived, my nerves went through the roof. Thousands of people gathered outside, there was no water in sight, my mouth dried up … my tongue went to the back of my throat. Her car door opened, Beyoncé put out her hand … and I spoke a new language invented from Pluto! Not only did I scare Queen Bey, I knocked her out with my horrible breath. She had her security remove me from the situation. I don’t know if I will ever meet her again to redeem myself, however, I promised to never knock out a celebrity ever again!
otg: You’ve interviewed politicians, professional athletes, TV personalities and famous celebrities… tell us about your all-time favourite interview?
mike: Mike Chalut Senior, my dad. My dad is a man who only wants YOU to succeed, and has dedicated his life to handing out smiles. A father of four, Chalut Sr. has become a staple on all my shows. Whether he is backstage tweaking my speech, on the airwaves sharing with parents how to empower their children, or dealing with issues of humanity. He is still waiting for a paycheck, but he is always standing by with a positive message to share. I just keep telling him the check is in the mail. Love you Dad xo
otg: Toronto is known for being a progressive and welcoming city; however I’m sure you still encounter prejudice from time to time. How is it being an openly gay host in mainstream media?
mike: 20 years ago an executive producer told me as an openly gay host I would never make it in mainstream media. I want to thank him for fuelling my fire and pushing me to succeed in this business. It has not been an easy road, I still have a long way to go and grow, but being true to myself on my platform and not allowing anyone to steal my dream has allowed me to connect with viewers and listeners on a very honest and real level.
otg: You’ve just completed a 4 year run out West with City TV, Breakfast TV and KISS FM, what’s up next? We have heard rumours of a new show.
mike: The hustle never stops! I loved working out west with Rogers Media. Everyone should take a trip to Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary … see the mountains, it is life changing! No matter where I work in the world, I am so lucky to call Toronto home. Our city is full of opportunity, but I strongly believe you have to GO to GROW. I am currently waiting on some network decisions, so in the meantime if you need me to shovel your snow or organize your closets, message me!
otg: You have offered your support to many local charitable organizations. Can you share a cause or non-profit that is particularly close to your heart?
mike: Get involved. Let’s help each other out! Our city is full of amazing organizations that fuel a better life for our friends in need. That’s what makes Toronto … Toronto. People helping people. I love going into schools spreading the message of what my father, Mike Chalut Sr. has taught our family about respect, responsibility and relationships, and of course reminding each other that everybody is a somebody!
