Stay cool! You are probably thinking …“Thanks Captain Obvious!” This heat is probably making you want to stay inside and start dating your air conditioner … but just remember we had a long winter and summer in the city is beyond exciting with lots of things to do. Get outside and drink buckets of water. Canada’s Wonderland now has 200 attractions, 70 thrilling rides and a 20-acre water park, and is always an amazing destination for all ages — you know that water park is calling your name. Happy August! How is there only one month of summer fun left? If you decide to go to a Jays Game it’s a great place to keep cool because the dome has been closed on extreme hot days and the beer is always ice cold. This is a colourful month in our city — over a million tourists are expected in Toronto during the August long weekend to experience everything Caribana has to offer. The beauty of Caribana is the varied audience it attracts, families across Canada and the U.S, young singles looking for a good time and celebrities throwing Caribana themed parties in clubs across Toronto. What’s happening this month … well here are my top 5 picks for August … time for you to get ONtheGO!
August 2– August 6
At CaribanaToronto.com you can find an itinerary and tickets to the majority of the Caribbean inspired events and parties taking place over Caribana 2018 weekend. Toronto’s Caribbean Caribana festival has grown HUGE since its start in 1967 and is currently North America’s largest cultural festival. What was once a three-day event has now grown into three weeks of celebration, absorbing most of the city with its infectious feel-good vibes. Be sure to wear big, bright, bold colours!
TASTE OF DANFORTH
August 10–August 12
Opa! Give me a bucket of tzatziki and no one talk to me as I dip my body in everything Greek! This is a delicious festival that shuts down the Danforth! Restaurateurs will be offering “Tasting Menus” for no more than $6 so that attendees can enjoy a multitude of tasty multiethnic treats. Yes, there is food, food, and more food — but Taste of the Danforth is so much more! There will be loads of free, family-friendly entertainment on our Celebrity Stage presented by OLG, Greek Stage, and Showcase Stage programmed this year by NXNE. Don’t miss ‘Art on Sneakers’ powered by MARTK’D, check out the Kids’ Fun Zone featuring a great EverBlock/Lego experience, the Sports Zone featuring activations and guest appearances from our Toronto professional sports teams, the “It’s All Greek To Me” plate breaking experience, and the Hollywood on the Danforth Zone presented by 20th Century Fox.
CONCERTS IN AUGUST!
Bryan Adams, Taylor Swift, Drake, Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper, and Shakira are all here this month! The Scotiabank Centre (formerly the ACC) is going to be busy! Tickets for all concerts are still available and STUB HUB is my go to site for last minute tickets … nothing’s better than a live show!
CNE … TAKE ME TO THE EX!
August 18–September 4
The CNE rolls back into town and you can expect to find the traditional roster of midway games, rides, wild fair foods and about a million ways to spend your guts out! If you are just visiting you have to put this on your to do list! It is such a fun day! Everything takes place by the waterfront and there are always some amazing performances on the main stage for free! You just have to pay admission and you have access to everything… well rides and food are going to cost you! But it’s worth it!
How do you stay cool and have a fashionable fun time with friends? POOL WITH A VIEW… Nothing says summer in the city quite like sitting poolside while taking in a spectacular urban vista. Last month, my partner and I had an amazing time at the rooftop pool at Bisha Hotel on Blue Jay Way! There is an infinity pool on the rooftop of the Thompson Hotel, the sophisticated lounge at LAVELLE and the lakeside Cabana Pool Bar are all stylish choices. The brand new luxury lakeside option, Hotel X, offers uninterrupted views of Lake Ontario and beyond from its 28th floor pool. Have a great month and always be ONtheGO!
If you have a fab event in September that you want me to talk about please don’t hesitate to email me at mikeychalut@ gmail.com.
