As a fitness professional I get flooded with numerous emails, letters, and tweets, all on fitness and exercise. In the last couple of months I’ve received more and more inquiries regarding core work. When I stopped and really thought about these inquires, I realized most people don’t even know what your core is, where it’s located, and how important it is to keep it strong. I have dedicated this month’s article on just that, keep reading so you can have a strong, healthy core.
So, always strengthen core, and where is it located? The core is the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex, and your thoracic and cervical spine. Basically, your core is where the body’s center of gravity is located, where movement begins. Your core holds up your whole body and you need a strong core for all body movement. This is why it is so very important to perform core exercises and keep it strong. As a trainer I have been taught, through my schooling, to incorporate core work in every single training session. It’s that important.
Now that you know what your core is, where it’s located and why it’s so important, I am going to give you one simple core exercise that can be done anywhere with no equipment needed.
THE STANDARD PLANK:
Get on the ground, on your elbows, and make sure your shoulder and elbow are in alignment: meaning, if you looked in the mirror you would see a straight line from your shoulder to your elbow. Next, rise up onto your toes and push back on your heels. You should be so straight that you can balance a cup of coffee on your back without having it spill. Engage every muscle, and breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth. Using your breath is very important, it gives you energy. Hold in standard plank position for 30-60 seconds and do 3 sets.
To make this exercise harder (progression), raise one leg for a three legged plank, and to make it easier (regression), perform a plank on your knees.
I hope August finds you all well. May you walk tall and feel good by strengthening your core. Remember, your core is what holds your whole body up, and where the center of gravity is located. Perform plank exercises 3 times a week this month of August and feel the amazing results.
