Since 1973, Nellie’s Shelter has been providing programs and services for women and children experiencing violence, poverty and homelessness.
Women like Karina.
Karina fled her native country in 2013 after suffering many years of physical and psychological abuse by her husband. The abuse she suffered included attempts on her life; the last and most vicious in front of her children.
Like many women fleeing abuse and trauma Karina sought safety at Nellie’s shelter and assistance from Nellie’s Community Support and Outreach office for a multitude of issues.
With encouragement and emotional support from the staff at Nellie’s Karina participated in an innovative program to regain her self- confidence and learn new skills to prepare her for employment. While participating in the program
she began to write down her experience and practice public speaking. Today, Karina has moved from victim to advocate. She is an artist and public speaker. In November she appeared, as the guest speaker, before the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
This Mother’s Day you can make a difference in the lives of moms like Karina.
